Ed Brown Society Members

The mission of the Ed Brown Society is achieved through the support of the Ed Brown Partnership, which includes 1/ST, Churchill Downs, Keeneland, NYRA, The Jockey Club and NTRA.  The support of our members is also pivotal to our success.

 

 

Dudley Allen Membership

$25,000 Annual Contribution​

Dudley Allen was born into slavery in Lexington, KY. Yet, he went on to become a noted thoroughbred owner and trainer. He owned a horse farm in Lexington, where he developed  horses to race in his stable and/or sell to wealthy horsemen.  In 1891, Allen trained, and held an ownership interest in, Kentucky Derby winner, Kingman.  Thus, he holds the distinction of being the first and only African American to win the Kentucky Derby as an owner.

 

 

Archie Donaldson Membership

Dr. Archie Donaldson, a Bahamian physician, embarked upon thoroughbred ownership in the 1960s. By 1978, his Chicago based stable had expanded to 36 high caliber horses.  His horses were trained by a notable African American horseman, Oscar Dishman.  The most accomplished horse in his stable, Silver Series, won numerous races, including the American Derby and the Hawthorne Derby.  Dr. Donaldson also owned significant interest in thirteen top stallions in Kentucky. 

 

 

Georgiana Foster Membership

$5,000 Annual Contribution

Georgiana Foster, of Long Island, NY,  was an African American thoroughbred owner in the 1950s and 1960s. During this period, she had the largest African American owned thoroughbred stable in the country, employing Chester Ross, a prolific African American trainer, to condition her horses. She achieved noteworthy success on the track at Aqueduct and Belmont racetracks.

Ansel Williamson Membership

$2,500 Annual Contribution

Ansel Williamson was born into slavery in Virginia Circa 1806.  Yet, he went on to become a most accomplished thoroughbred trainer. He was the mentor of Edward Dudley Brown at Woodburn Stud, near Midway, KY.  Ansel Williamson was the trainer of the first Kentucky Derby winner, Aristides. He also won a number of other major races, including the Belmont Stakes. He was posthumously inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1998.
